Upper Deck Volunteer Mission #10
Dear Upper Deck Volunteer Alliance Members,
Thank you so much to all of you who have been involved in our missions and even to those of you who have just been watching from the sidelines, encouraging others. We are so happy we created this group of collectors dedicated to making the hobby better and we have an event coming up designed to do just that.
Do you realize how many people have never opened a pack of trading cards in the US and Canada? Our data indicates that number is unbelievably high and we want to do something about it. We want to give everyone a chance to open up a new Upper Deck NHL pack for absolutely FREE! Next Saturday is National Hockey Card Day, a really fun day where fans can visit different Certified Diamond Dealer locations and receive a free pack of Upper Deck’s National Hockey Card Day NHL cards. Let’s show them just how fun it can be to participating in the hobby we all love and hopefully we’ll find some new or lapsed collectors in the process.
And that is what Mission #10 is all about for the month of February. We want our Volunteer Alliance to help get the word out there about 2012 National Hockey Card Day. As you may be aware, this is the first year that we will have a program for Canada AND the United States. We are looking for Volunteer Alliance members to get creative and make sure people know that National Hockey Card Day is coming next weekend on Saturday, February 11.
Members may want to call sports radio stations, work with their local hobby shop that is sponsoring an event, create viral videos, post on hockey message boards, rallying a group of friends to visit a shop together, try to get on TV, etc. The sky is the limit as always. Just make sure you get some documentation on what you are doing so you can provide us with your results and hopefully earn yourself an Upper Deck Mail Day.
And you are not limited to just getting the word out there about National Hockey Card Day. Ideally we would love to see members create some content for why it is fun to open a pack of Upper Deck NHL cards, why you should collect them, what too look for, who to look for, etc. Even though the Super Bowl is this weekend, we are looking for members to think puck this month! Here is some more information about the National Hockey Card Day program:
The website for the program will be updated early next week with a participating store listing so we can drive collectors to retailers in their area. We are just waiting to get some information from a few more retailers who want to participate.
Please email us your results from these missions to UpperDeckMarketing@upperdeck.com. As always, being able to send us links, images or other proof of what you were able to accomplish helps us a lot when we are reviewing for who will receive an Upper Deck Mail Day. You will have until Thursday, March 1 to accomplish Mission #10 and send us information on what you did. As always, feel free to collaborate and share with other VA members through the Volunteer Alliance Facebook page found here. Will you be the next to receive an Upper Deck Mail Day? You’ll never know if you don’t get involved. Take part today!
Sincerely,
Chris Carlin

Upper Deck Volunteer Mission Update from Upper Deck:
VA Members, we are going to be in touch with winners next week. We apologize for the delay, but we've been like busy little elves around here. There will not be a mission before the holidays as we want to make sure our fans enjoy them, but we will be back with more in 2012. If you are looking to do something though, here's a little challenge we went out to everyone with today. We would love to see a VA member take it!

Good Day Everyone!
I know most of us have heard about the KINDLE FIRE! I'll tell ya, if your on the go a lot and you want to take Upper Deck with you this is a GREAT WAY to do it! You can connect to the Internet, read up on your Upper Deck Articles, do emails on the go, have a place to watch movies and read books, etc. Since the movies and books are saved on the Cloud instead of on a hard drive, you can pull up your books and movies where ever you are. Being a sports card nut, I like it because I can get to all the sites while on the go, this is how I stay up to date on all my Upper Deck Articles so I don't miss anything! This is a GREAT gift to give someone this season, but better hurry! They ARE selling like Hot Cakes! More then Last Year! So I'd jump on getting a KINDLE FIRE asap! It's still currently In-Stock but not sure for how much longer!

In Honor of Veterans Day, Upper Deck Donates to Soldiers Serving in Harm’s Way.
By Chris Carlin
With Veterans Day upon us this Friday, we think it is important to take some time out and think about those who have served their country. Upper Deck was founded in the United States. We make our trading cards in the United States. And we feel it is important to send a small token of our gratitude to those serving to defend the United States. Say what you want about conflicts the U.S. finds themselves involved in, there is no doubt those serving do so honorably and are worthy of our regard.
That’s why Upper Deck donated several thousand packs of collegiate trading cards to Operation Gratitude recently in honor of Veterans Day. Operation Gratitude specializes in sending care packages to troops serving in hostile regions around the world. Small tokens of home can mean so much to those serving, and Upper Deck cards can serve as a nice escape for our troops. This is not the first time Upper Deck has donated to Operation Gratitude, and it certainly will not be the last. We invite our customers and fans to think of Operation Gratitude when thinking of which charitable organizations they will support during the holiday gift giving season. Here is a direct link to donate to this worthwhile cause: https://www.operationgratitude.com/donate/.
“Upper Deck has been working with Operation Gratitude since 2009 donating packs of trading cards that we include in our care packages to troops serving in harms way,” said Carolyn Blashek, founder of Operation Gratitude. “We are thrilled to receive their latest donation of collegiate based trading card packs that will provide our heroes a reminder of home and a connection to their favorite college teams.”

Upper Deck and Chicago-based charity plan to collect and donate NHL cards next weekend in Canada
Carlsbad, CA (November 3, 2011) – Have you ever seen a child open a pack of sports cards? The sense of wonder and excitement they have as they go through the cards and find some of their favorite players is really amazing to behold. Unfortunately not every child has the opportunity to experience this simple pleasure for a variety of reasons and that is where Cards2Kids comes in. Upper Deck recently profiled this emerging 501(c)(3) charity on the Upper Deck Blog where their mission is to get trading cards into the hands of kids to provide a nice distraction for them.
What is really impressive about the organization is their founder John Makowiec who is actually still in high school. While juggling his studies and other school activities, Makowiec runs Cards2Kids setting up donation drives, organizing volunteers, talking with media and most importantly; getting Cards2Kids. He works with a variety of youth organizations to deliver cards to primarily children’s hospitals, working to brighten the days of those youngsters.
As Upper Deck learned more about Cards2Kids and particularly John, we realized this was an organization we wanted to work with. John approached Upper Deck about holding a donation drive at the Sports Cards & Collectibles Expo in Toronto, Ontario from Friday, November 11 through Sunday, November 13 recently and it seemed like a natural fit.
Collectors attending the popular weekend show are encouraged to donate any NHL cards in their collection at the Upper Deck corporate booth. Representatives from Cards2Kids will be on hand to help accept the donations and answer questions about the program. On Sunday, staff will work to package up all the NHL cards received for kids. Once the show is completed, Upper Deck and Cards2Kids will donate packages of all the NHL cards received to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.
"I am really excited to have the opportunity to be involved in one of the largest sports card events in the world,” said John Makowiec, founder of Cards2Kids. “This will be Cards2Kids' first opportunity to show the entire sports card community what we are trying to do, which is spread the joy of sports cards to as many kids as possible. In particular, we look forward to helping kids at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. I am really appreciative of Upper Deck and their willingness to help us in our mission to give sports Cards2Kids who are sick or cannot afford them."
“We are honored to have the opportunity to partner with Cards2Kids on their first international donation drive,” said Chris Carlin, sports marketing & social media manager for Upper Deck. “The card collecting community has big hearts so I fully anticipate we will see collectors donating several thousands of cards throughout the weekend to help with this very worthy philanthropic initiative.”

Dan Wheldon
Rest In Peace Dan. My thoughts and Prayers go out to your family and friends.
Wheldon was killed in the IndyCar Series finale when his car went air born and crashed violently into the catch fence during a horrific 15-car accident on Lap 11 on turn 2. Wheldon died from blunt trauma to the head. Some of the reports keep bringing up the fact that he was racing for a $5 million dollar prize and that he was pushing it to get to the front. But if you watch the videos that are all over YouTube, you will see that his car went air born after another car had. In My Opinion ( I may start a new section here called: In My Opinion, so look for that soon.), the track was to fast for as many cars that were on it. 2, the cars going as fast as 230 mph. Dan had no time to react when he came up on the crash in front of him. I saw one video where it looked like a tire blew out or a tie rod failed on a car in front which could have caused the crash in the first place. They need to look at these videos and see that. It wasn't Dan's fault for the crash, it happened before he got there and the cars were too fast for the track so he had no time to react thus sending his car flying right after another one did. I really wish they would stop saying that he was in the crash because he was chasing that $5 million dollar prize. In My Opinion - that wasn't the case.
We are going to miss this great driver. Rest In Peace Dan. Everyone, please say a prayer for him and his family, thank you.
Dave
