OK all of us Upper Deck Volunteer Alliance Members! Here is your NEW Alliance Mission! This is mission 11 and there are 2 parts that you can do, you can do either one or both! Have fun with this! This is what it's all about :
We are back with another two-part mission for you to take on. As always, you can do both, just do one really well, or don't do any at all, that's all up to you! We encourage you to participate however because there are mail days up for grabs which we know you love! Additionally, I'd like to introduce Sean Hayden who is helping us out as an intern in our Marketing Department this summer. He's going to be working a lot with the Volunteer Alliance on the next tow missions at least. Instead of sending us your results to the general Marketing inbox, please send then directly to him at sean_hayden@upperdeck.com and he'll organize those results so we can go through them and select members who will receive a mail day.
With the summer near full swing, there is a lot going on here at Upper Deck. One of the things we are most excited about is a new promotion around Father's Day. We thing it is really important to encourage fathers to collect with their kids for the long-term viability of this hobby. Upper Deck began the Volunteer Alliance to try and help make the hobby better and we believe that if we can get more fathers collecting with their kids, we can do that. To encourage it, we came up with Upper Deck's "Father Of The Year" promotion to honor a collecting father that is sharing the hobby with his kid(s). Check out more on the story here: Which Card Collecting Dad has what it takes to be Upper Deck’s ‘Father of the Year?’
http://bit.ly/L6LxdH
We encourage all of our Volunteer Alliance Members to participate in the promotion and attached you will find more details on it. And for the first part of Mission 11, we are looking for VA Members to help us promote the Father's Day promotion by creating increased awareness for it. Fans have less then tow weeks to get their submissions in so we would love to see VA Members jump on card collecting message boards to help get the word out there. It would be cool to see VA Members work with their local card shops as well potentially to help their customers find out about the promotion. We want to see you use your creativity for getting the message out there!
The second part of Mission 11 involves you putting on your thinking cap and getting creative. Many of you
regularly read The Upper Deck Blog which is one of our platforms to share information on new products and opinions on topical sports stories. Frequently we will have guest contributors write stories for us which is a lot of fun and provides great content for readers. We thought it would be awesome to have members of our Volunteer Alliance write stories on the hobby or their favorite sports. If you chose to participate, we'll need you to submit 4-6 paragraphs as well as 2-5 jpeg images. You can also include links to video if you think it will help the story. With regard to content, the sky is the limit! You can talk about all aspects of your favorite sports, your collection, favorite stories of collecting, what's happening now in the sports world or the hobby, authenticity, what it is like to be in the Volunteer Alliance, a "how to" post, collecting retail, pack searchers, trading card shows, buying online, trading online, top ten best UD cards of all-time or a particular sport, how do you sell your cards, how do you get autographs; again, the sky is the limit. Your blog is not limited to the above ideas. You may personally have a story that will inspire others or even Upper Deck. If you have questions about what is or is not okay or you want to run something by us, please email that question to UpperDeckMarketing@upperdeck.com an we will review. Also, don't worry too much about how good you are at writing, we will help by editing your pieces to make sure they look great.
From there we will share your stories with thousands of UD fans and followers once they post to the Upper Deck Blog. We encourage you to ask fans to comment on your stories and blogs that get high volume of comments will be in contention for a better mail day, so think about that as you put your post together.
The deadline for Mission 11 is Tuesday, June 26. All documentation needs to be received in by that date to Sean Hayden to qualify for an Upper Deck Mailday. We'll review entries that week and share details on your next mission shortly thereafter! If you want to collaborate with other members, remember to check out Upper Deck Volunteer Alliance on Facebook. Good Luck and thanks for your help as always!

Help us "Save Jay's" Sports Card and Memorabilia Shop.
This just in from Chris Carlin at Upper Deck Headquarters. There is a shop in Ashland,WI. that needs our help as collectors to "Save Jay's" Sports Cards and Memorabilia Store. The store is located at 212 B West Main St. in Ashland,WI. You can get in touch with Jay at : jayssportscardsllc@gmail.com to see how YOU can help or just stop by the store and purchase some product to help him keep his store open.
From Chris Carlin:
We love to spotlight our Certified Diamond Dealer Partners and some reasons why you need to visit their stores. If you haven't been to a card store lately and are in the Wisconsin Area, make sure you visit our Featured Retailer.

Store Hours : Tuesday-Wednesday 10AM - 7PM, Thursday - Friday 10AM-9PM, Saturday 9AM-6PM and closed Sunday & Monday.
We have been publishing a series of blog post's on "How to open a Trading Card Shop" as of late and as I shared those with our fan base, I saw a portion of a comment that immediately grabbed my attention:
" Been open for one year and six months and will be closing in thirty days. I did everything those guys talked about and it sill did not work."
Now my main job ( Chris Carlin at Upper Deck ), is helping our hobby shops be successful and a piece of that would also be to keep them in business. We reached out to the shop owner who posted those remarks and found out more about what was going on with him. I was immediately impressed by his passion. He had worked hard to get the shop opened by supporting his business with revenue from his former main business. Jason ( Jay ),, removes BATS from businesses and residences without harming the little critters. His Business "BATS BY DAY" has done well for him, but I immediately sympathized with his plight. Wouldn't rather be dealing with sports cards then something like this?

Jay's Sports and Memorabilia is located in the basement of this retail address so he has to work hard for people to find his business.

YIKES! I'd rather much be talking about trading cards then shooing this guy& his family from an attic!
Now Jay has opened his shop in a small town which has certainly been affected by the adverse economy so he has been having a tough time making this business work. Things are at the point where he needs the help from the community to get behind his business and help or he may have to close his doors. Here at Upper Deck we have committed to helping Jay by helping to organize a "Save Jay's" Event on Saturday March 24, 2012 from 5PM-7PM. Stop by for your opportunity to take home some GREAT Giveaway Items including signed memorabilia and autographed cards! In the mean time here is Jay's Story:
"My name is Jason but most people call me "Jay". I own Jay's Sports Cards and Memorabilia in Ashland, Wisconsin and we have been opened since November 2010. I started collecting cards at the age of four when my Uncle gifted me a small collection. They were probably all commons, but I loved them anyway. I got my first pack of cards in 1988 and pulled a Tom Glavine Rookie Card and he has been my favorite player ever since.
" At the age of 10 I walked into a card shop for the first time in Washington and knew that this is what I wanted to do. I looked around the shop and there were cards upon cards with $100 price tags on them, I could have stayed there for hours on end. I had brought in my most valuable cards to see if I could sell them, to my dismay the most valuable card I had was worth one dollar, but to a 10 year old this is a lot of dough.
"The card shop owner told me they were looking for higher dollar items and to bring them in if I got them. It took me a little more then a year and I hit a FRANK THOMAS Triple Crown insert out of an Upper Deck Product valued at $15.00. I sold it for $7.00 and at that moment I was hooked!
" I opened the shop to fulfill a lifelong dream and because there are no card shops in Ashland with the last one closing in 2001. Another reason I opened the shop is because there really isn't much for kids to do in Ashland. I wanted to provide a safe and fun place for kids to go. I remember my experiences in card shops as I was a young boy and I want to be able to provide that to other kids. Unlike most businesses I promote loitering. Come down to Jay's, talk about sports and check out some cards you hope to add to your collection one day.
" I love the hobby and I am very passionate about sports: mainly baseball and football. I grew up a baseball player and like any kid I wanted to be like Mickey Mantle or Ken Griffey Jr. I would pretend to be in the bottom of the ninth with bases loaded, two outs, a full count, down by three runs, in the fianl game of the World Series. I frequently hit a home-run in those circumstances and the crowd went wild, AHHHH! Today I'm not looking to hit a home run with my shop,I'd be happy to hit a series of singles to keep the business going.
" At Jay's Sports Cards and Memorabilia , we do more then just sell cards. I want to help new collectors understand the hobby and how to be happy with their collection. I want to teach kids how to take care of their cards because I know I didn't when I was younger. If someone new comes down to the shop and I don't have what they're looking for I will go and find it for them.
"But those who do love cards, we have a great assortment of new and vintage stock with boxes, packs and single. I am also happy to trade with customers as well. Another reason why folks should come to Jay'sis because we hit BIG CARDS in here ALL the time! Since opening we have hit OVER 20 one-of-one cards and around SEVEN BRYCE HARPER AUTOGRAPHS! I'm not saying every box will yield huge hits, but it seems we get some great here in Ashland. In my 26 years of collecting I have never seen this many BIG Hits pulled until I opened the shop.
" Like most retail businesses in small markets, we have struggled as of late and I appreciate Upper Deck is willing to help out with a "Save Jay's" Event. This is my dream and it means a lot to my customers in the area that we stay open. I'm not in this for the money, I love what I do and I want to share this hobby with people in our community. I don't want my dream to end and I appreciate everyone's help with that. So please stop by today and join me in this wonderful dream!'
If you are near the Ashland, Wisconsin area, please make sure to visit Jay's this month in particular and don't miss the "Save Jay's" Event on Saturday March 24, 2012 from 5PM - 7PM!!! We prefer to see Jay like this!
And what can you expect to score if you attend the "Save Jay's" Event? Well this is just a portion of the items we are helping jay out with! DON'T miss out!
ALL these Goodies are going home with Jay's Customers! DON'T miss out!
Jay also has SIGNED Bat's!
And a WHOLE LOT MORE!
So make sure you stop by Jays Sports Cards Shop in Ashland,WI.!
And don't miss out on the "Save Jay's" Event on Saturday March 24, 2012 from 5PM-7PM!
2008 Upper Deck Icons-Dan Marino- Looking for.....
Good Day Everyone!
As some of you know, I research memorabilia for people who are looking for something. Right now I have a woman who would like to complete this set of 2008 Upper Deck Icons "Immortal Letterman" Patch cards. The one's she's looking for are the unsigned ones and numbered to 36. I have found a few for her but I am still looking for the rest. If you or anyone has any that they would like to part with please contact me at davebonneville@comcast.net. I have been paying mostly $39.99 for them, so if you have some you want to part with for around that price, please drop me a line. If you have some signed one's let me know and I'll pass that information on to her and see if she'd be interested in those as well but for now it's the Letterman Patch cards she's working on. Thank you and have a GREAT DAY!

Upper Deck Volunteer Mission #10
Dear Upper Deck Volunteer Alliance Members,
Thank you so much to all of you who have been involved in our missions and even to those of you who have just been watching from the sidelines, encouraging others. We are so happy we created this group of collectors dedicated to making the hobby better and we have an event coming up designed to do just that.
Do you realize how many people have never opened a pack of trading cards in the US and Canada? Our data indicates that number is unbelievably high and we want to do something about it. We want to give everyone a chance to open up a new Upper Deck NHL pack for absolutely FREE! Next Saturday is National Hockey Card Day, a really fun day where fans can visit different Certified Diamond Dealer locations and receive a free pack of Upper Deck’s National Hockey Card Day NHL cards. Let’s show them just how fun it can be to participating in the hobby we all love and hopefully we’ll find some new or lapsed collectors in the process.
And that is what Mission #10 is all about for the month of February. We want our Volunteer Alliance to help get the word out there about 2012 National Hockey Card Day. As you may be aware, this is the first year that we will have a program for Canada AND the United States. We are looking for Volunteer Alliance members to get creative and make sure people know that National Hockey Card Day is coming next weekend on Saturday, February 11.
Members may want to call sports radio stations, work with their local hobby shop that is sponsoring an event, create viral videos, post on hockey message boards, rallying a group of friends to visit a shop together, try to get on TV, etc. The sky is the limit as always. Just make sure you get some documentation on what you are doing so you can provide us with your results and hopefully earn yourself an Upper Deck Mail Day.
And you are not limited to just getting the word out there about National Hockey Card Day. Ideally we would love to see members create some content for why it is fun to open a pack of Upper Deck NHL cards, why you should collect them, what too look for, who to look for, etc. Even though the Super Bowl is this weekend, we are looking for members to think puck this month! Here is some more information about the National Hockey Card Day program:
The website for the program will be updated early next week with a participating store listing so we can drive collectors to retailers in their area. We are just waiting to get some information from a few more retailers who want to participate.
Please email us your results from these missions to UpperDeckMarketing@upperdeck.com. As always, being able to send us links, images or other proof of what you were able to accomplish helps us a lot when we are reviewing for who will receive an Upper Deck Mail Day. You will have until Thursday, March 1 to accomplish Mission #10 and send us information on what you did. As always, feel free to collaborate and share with other VA members through the Volunteer Alliance Facebook page found here. Will you be the next to receive an Upper Deck Mail Day? You’ll never know if you don’t get involved. Take part today!
Sincerely,
Chris Carlin
